Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu

Former State Senator

of

West Lagos, Nigeria

and

Former Governor
of the

State of Lagos, Nigeria

Past Lagos State Governor Tinubu is currently the national leader of the ruling party in Nigeria, All Progressive Congress (APC) and is said to be among Nigeria’s most successful politicians ever. Elected tot he State Government of  Lagos State as a State Senator in 1992, Then-Senator Tinubu found himself fighting for democracy and his constituency after the National Elections were annulled in June of 1993 amidst a military coup. Continuing the struggle for democracy in Nigeria from abroad after threats upon his life, Governor Tinubu returned to Nigeria in 1998 and was elected Governor for 2 terms of the state of Lagos, finishing his formal elected service in 2007.

Lauded by many for improvements in infrastructure int he State of Lagos during his tenure, Governor Tinubu has developed the reputation as a champion for democracy within Nigeria and has also been an ardent supporter of international initiatives, such as the End Polio Now Campaign spearheaded by Rotary International. With Nigeria just having passed the 3-year mark of no new cases of the Wild Polio Virus, Governor Tinubu has been seen as one of the leaders within Nigeria to promote total Polio Eradication against some extremist sentiment in certain parts of the country.

No stranger to Chicago and to the South Side, Governor Tinubu completed his undergraduate studies in the late 70s at Chicago City Colleges (Richard J. Daley) and Chicago State University and also worked for a time for a few Chicago-based Fortune 500 companies before returning to Nigeria. We welcome Governor Tinubu "Home" by honoring him with an award from our Rotary Club for his outstanding service to the End Polio Now Campaign to eradicate Polio off of the face of the Earth.
